We are strong believers and advocates in the maker movement. We have seen countless ideas grow from mental sketches to full-fledged projects thanks to collaboration and shared knowledge. We are active members of OlyMEGA, a non-profit makerspace in Olympia, WA.
We started HomeAutomationHacking.com to support a multi-month course on home automation that we are teaching at OlyMEGA. This course will cover the gambit of home automation from sensors and RF-controlled appliances to home network security to a local cloud server running OpenHAB on a Raspberry Pi connected to a customized Wink Hub. This course is only our launchpad. We plan on using this site for more than our home automation course.
The maker movement is built on sharing knowledge and ideas. We will do our best to give credit where due. Many projects require a lot of combing the web and trial and error. When we get on a roll, the code tends to take precedence over the notes...If it's clear that we are building on your ideas, send us a note and we'll do our best to make sure you get the credit that's rightfully yours.
WE WILL NOT post code that has not been heavily tested to prevent risks, but we're not perfect. Let us know if you find an issue, and we will resolve safety and security risks as soon as physically possible. Even better, if you find an issue, show us how to resolve it so we all can build on the community we believe in.
WE WILL NOT post code which is the intellectual property of others, unless we have concrete permission from the owner. Don't look to us for rooted firmware updates or other proprietary code. You can, however, look to us for instructions, tools and advice for dealing with firmware and software you already have, or to point you towards those who are authoring alternate software that we believe meets appropriate standards of safety and security.
